Would you allow a stranger to place thoughts in your mind?
If you read the daily newspaper or watch television news you certainly do.
To some extent your mind is controlled by the people on the news editorial staff who decide which stories that you read or view. These people select, repackage, and present the news in a manner that tries to make you view the world through their eyes and with their world-view.
By continually reading newspapers and watching television news we are allowing other people to decide what we think about during the day. We are giving strangers the ability to fill our minds with distressing thoughts and images.
Your perception of the world is your reality. It is entirely under your control.
When you decide to expose yourself only to positive and peaceful things you can change your world for the better.

Reb Nachman of Breslov said (something along the lines of) "I don't understand how someone goes without reading the news, they are unable to see the way that Hashem runs the world!"
This is obviously a bit tongue-in-cheek; most of us are not on the level that we see the hand of Hashem when we read the news, but I think it is somewhat of a directive as to how we are to look at news and the world in general.
Unfortunately, the current media is morally corrupt, and finding the actual news between all the editorialization (I think I just made up a word there) and garbage is often hard to do in the first place.
It's also one of those things that everyone complains about (but we seldom see any improvement): The main-stream media is generally speaking to the lowest common denominator among the reader(/viewer)ship. They neglect millions of worthwhile news and information to tell us about the latest Hollywood escapade, or other sensationalistic useless story!
Because of that, I do agree with your sentiments here (but I don't know if I'd be able to stick to it). It's very hard for some of us to follow this approach, but it is a laudable one.
