Now that I am back on caffeine, I am interested to try this new product.

I don't know if you keep Cholov Yisroel, but if you do, be aware that supposedly this isnt Cholov Yisroel and does contain dairy. I wish it didnt, I'd be cases of this if I could.

Chaim: I knew I was going to get a Cholov Yisroel comment! I actually have not yet reached the level where I keep Cholov Yisroel yet, although I am taking steps forward.

At home my wife only buys Cholov Yisroel milk, however my family and I eat other OU-D products such as cookies and ice cream as well.

I know it seems strange, but that is where we are currently holding.

It's still something to be careful with -a coke might be mighty tempting to wash down the chullent . . . ch"v.
It seems like a rather odd combo though -coke with my daily Java . . . I don't know

I dunno ASJ...looks a little dangerous to me...but then again I am not a soda fan. Stick with good ol' java, pure and unadulterated. ;-)

C'mon people, you have any idea how really damging this stuff is to your health? I'd suggest to read the 4th perek of Rambam's hilchos deos where he talks about healthy lifestyle. He writes among other things (halacha 9): There are foods which are very unhealthy and it's proper for a person TO NEVER EAT THEM... Then he goes on to list some foods that were unhealthy in his time (all of which are natural foods). I wonder what he would say about coke which is full of chemicals...
It beats me how rabbis give hechsher to these things... isn't "u'shmartem m'od l'nafshoteichem" still a mitzva d'oraisa?
ASJ (which I really love your blog)and all the other Jewish junk food eaters, please take note.
P.S. I strongly suggest that everyone learns the whole 4th perek of Hilchos Deos as well as the 32nd perek of Kitzur Shulchan Aruch (halachos of health). Not all the details there may apply now as nature may have changed, but the general principles still do apply (look for them in the Rambam, where he sais "klal gadol b'rfua"), all the natural therapists now agree with those principles the Rambam wrote back then. It's a pity many of us know the Reb Chaim on Taam K'ikar but don't know about simple things like this... no wonder so many people get ill... Hashem yirachem. Please take note.

Oy!: You raise some interesting issues, however I don't think there is any modern halachic authority who forbids caffeine whether it is in coffee or soda.

Additionally, take a look at the Pictures of the Week section in the weekly edition of Hamodia. There you will routinely see bottles of Coca Cola or other soda on the tables in front of many Rebbes and Roshei Yeshiva. These people are much more learned in halacha than I am and yet they choose to drink beverages that contain caffeine.

OK, while I think a moderate amount of coffee is perfectly fine, and may be even healthfull in certain respects, I do not think, and feel strongly about, not drinking most sodas. I know from how my body reacts to CocaCola, and many other sodas, that they ARE NOT GOOD for your health.

There are, however, certain sodas that are mainly seltzer and natural flavorings. (however, the created bubbles in most seltzer is from an artificial gas, which is really not good for the digesting process, contrary to what people think). These are not as bad, if your body takes well to seltzer.

Personally, I love Lemon Perrier, which is a naturally occurring bubbly mineral water.

With all that said, ASJ, I am also tempted to taste this new fandangled BLAK. I think they are competing with the Israeli non-alcoholic "Beera"! Have you tasted that?

With so many people allergic to milk and dairy products is it clearly marked as containing milk?

Neshama: I haven't tried that product yet.

Hirshel: I am not sure. I don't think many people understand what the symbol OU-D really means.

ASJ: This is a very thorny issue. I didn't mean that these foods are outright assur. But there are many things which have a heter (and even appear in Hamodia, and are even done by roshey yeshivos!) that may not find favour in Hashem's eyes (to put it mildly). We don't have to look farther than Gush Katif where many religious newspapars and roshey yeshivos didn't say a thing against it... (that's just an exapmle). There's more to say on the topic of our unhealthy lifestyles (people don't realize how much damage it really causes - we're used to it already). The damage goes from plain being unhealthy and getting sick a lot to ... yes, teenagers having "raging hormones" which causes them to loose control and do serious aveiros R'L.
Please, please think about it seriously. If you want I can write more on the topic (I have experience counceling people in nutrition, and what I wrote above comes from first hand knowledge).

By the way, I didn't mean that davka caffeine should be avoided, I wrote about all unhealthy foods in general. And the coffe that the chassidisha rebbes had in all those stories was totally natural, not so today.

Interesting conversation!

Just wanted to add two cents:

The following is from the Star K's web site:

"Coca-Cola Blak (spelled without a ‘C’) is a specialty premium drink that will be sold in unique (glass) bottles. This product formula is dairy and the product will be correctly labeled OUD."

Mazel tov - may you have loads, loads and loads of nachas from your children and may we have Moshiach Now!

Unfortunately, I just tried and and it wasn't worth the wait. It tastes like someone poured 20 packets of Equal into a strong cup of coffee and then dumped the contents into a glass of Coca-Cola. It is WAY to sweet for me.
