From an e-mail from my mother today:

Today I was testing a second grader. I had to ask her what "imagine" meant. (This is for reading aptitude.) She said, "It's like I can't imagine that my baby sister died." I said, "Did that really happen?" and she said yes.

I'm shaking my head.
