Man, you stole my thunder, I was gonna post on that, I was even shlepping around the free sample they were distributing!

Of course Artscroll sets the tone and decides what's "in", so I guess חק לישראל is "out". They also made sure that (at least Parshas Bresihis) has no pieces from Chassidishe Seforim. All recent Rosh Yeshivos, yes, but no Chasidim, not even "generic" ones like the Sfas Emes.

Way to go Scherman!

Hirshel: I have to give you credit, the title and the whole structure of this posting seems like it belongs on Circus Tent. Perhaps I have been reading your blog too long....

What do you want from Artscroll? They never pretended that they want to teach people chasidus. Their cold relation to all nistar and chasidus is apparent in their censoring what they think is "too deep" etc. Even in their recent translation of such classics as Ramban on Chumash they cut out all Kabolo and nistar.

They do respect tzadikim though, and you have to appreciate that they aren't misnagdim. But they aren't chasidim either, who would claim a special value to chasidus itself.

And about Zhitomir sforim - I love these editions. Tzadikim say, that they posess a special kdusho. Publishers of Slavita and ther successors in Zhitomir (they were descendatns of Reb Pinchos Korizter zy"o) dipped their publishing forms in mikve prior to start the publishing, and they spent a lot of effort and money to produce beatiful sforim instilled with kdusho and taharo.

Having learned of my Jewishness just a few years ago(when my mother was on her death bed)I am not proficient in Hebrew (yet),so I very much appreciate various publications of Artscroll. This new one as well. For someone who has never savored old coke, the "new" coke tastes pretty good!
Also, I really appreciate your site. I learn alot here too! Toda!

The problem with artscroll is not that they don't publish chassidus (per say -for in truth, they should) the problem is that they sell their brand of world outlook as "the final word" on what Judaism is.

Your post title reminds me of a story that my father retells.
He was teaching in a coed high school in the 70s, and he asked his students "What's a chok?" (as in a Mitzva with a hidden reason, e.g. Para Aduma)
One student answered, "Rabbi, I don't know, but things sure go better with it!"

Yaak: Funny...maybe I should have changed the title to "Have a Chok And a Smile"

A Yid: I just remembered, the Stone Edition of the Chumash from Artscroll has three places that references the commentary of the Degel Machaneh Ephraim.

How many people learn the old Chok today, honestly ? Do you ? Have you ever ? Does Hirshel ?

Do you think that it would have been a success to just put out another edition of it ?

Maybe there was good reason to make the changes Artscroll did ?

reader:
Comparison is invalid. Choyk stresses the overall learning of Toyro. A whole Parde"s. Artscroll is pretty far from it.

I wonder how many of the big defenders of Chok here actually learn it......

reader: I also once wondered, is it really used by anyone at all. Then I started to pay attention in shuls, and noticed that it is used more than I realized, so Choyk is not abandoned you can be sure.

But the main thing is actually not a certain formal and fixed way of doing it. So learn what you need and what you have to, but do it with tmimus and lishmo which are the main thing.

Reader: If you click on the Chok L'Yisroel link in this posting you will see that I actually do learn it everyday. There is a new printing (pictured in that posting) that helps one learning this sefer. Also, see my sidebar - I have a link to echok.com

Despite the unfortunate name, which sounds like a spoon of castor oil in the morning, the Artscroll book is brilliantly executed and fascinating. A person can become very well informed simply by reading it every day. The general editor of the series, Rabbi Yoseif Asher Weiss, is a Rosh Yeshiva and a gifted speaker, as well as a talented and scholarly editor.

ASJ,
What is the thinking behind the omission of any chassidus, in our times, from Ar......'s seforim?

(As R' Tzig commented:)
"They also made sure that (at least Parshas Bresihis) has no pieces from Chassidishe Seforim"

Why does he say that?
Maybe that is why (to me) their seforim don't have the same (physical) feel as chassidishe seforim?! They actually feel different in my hands.

(PS, I here late because I was doing a lot of shopping, peeling, & alot of cooking tonite [so i can go to shul tomorrow] and needed a diversion before sleep)
