I do see a lot of parents doing the 'kid worship' thing. (I'm sure I do it too at times.) I'm pretty sure that smaller families, guilt over both parents working, and divorce guilt play roles. The emphasis seems to be on ego, ego, ego- instead of morals, family, and community. I want for our son to be a moral member of 'the team', which by definition means subjugating his ego at times. Hopefully we will succeed. In defense of lame parenting decisions, it is difficult to teach something you were never taught.

I agree with the point Dalton makes about creating unrealistic expectations as well. Obviously, what goes on in your home needs to teach them to succeed outside the home. Outside the home they will need to be part of a team, know how to take orders, know how to hold their tongues, etc.

With regards to kids cursing at their parents, that NEVER would have happened in my parents' house, despite the near total lack of discipline. Working in schools I have noticed a serious increase in this. Numerous times I have witnessed kids saying things I can't type here to teachers and they are back in school the next day. Great reason to turn off the TV and watch what comes out of our mouths.
