Never Overly Strict

Rav Ada bar Ahavah's students asked, "In what merit did you receive a long life?" He answered, "I was never upset and overly strict in my home."

Would it be too strict to give that little wise-guy sticking out his tongue a nice gezundter potch?

I think this is an excellent parenting advice. Just as Hashem is not overly strict with us, we should strive not to be overly strict with our (future) children. Thankfully, I was blessed with parents that were not overly strict; and my parents were blessed with fairly well behaved children! One of whom is on the Derech. (That would be me)

I agree with DanielS82 - it is indeed great parenting advice. As a professional coach much of the challenges I deal with stem from people being constantly told what they can, can't, should, shouldn't do at home when they were younger.

A little more freedom would go a long way to creating calmer environment now and a more peaceful adult in the future... as counterintuitive as it may seem.
